Breast Augmentation Using Implants

Breast augmentation – also called augmentation mammoplasty – is a surgery to enhance the size, shape, and volume of the breast using implants. It is primarily for women who hope to increase the overall size of their breasts. But there are many reasons why women opt for breast augmentation. Some of them are:

  • Restore the lost fullness after pregnancy.
  • To enhance the appearance of the breasts if they are too small.
  • Improve self-confidence.

HOW IS IT DONE?

The surgery takes around 1-2 hours during which the patient is given local anesthesia where the patient is awake but the breast area is numb.

Silicone implants are used for breast enhancement

The surgeon makes a cut under the breast (inframammary fold) or around the areola depending on the type of implant and how much enlargement is to being done. The surgeon then places the implant, a sac-like structure filled with saline water or silicone, under the breast tissue or chest muscle. After the implants are placed, the surgeon closes the cut with sutures.

HOW PAINFUL IS BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY?

Do not worry. Breast surgery does not much pain as you might think. Actually, the pain during recovery is very negligible that over-the-counter pain killer medications, such as Advil or Tylenol, are just enough to manage any kind of discomfort you might feel after the surgery. Do not hold yourself thinking about the prospect of pain during the recovery process. Think about the promising result which will boost your confidence and you can achieve your aesthetic results. If worries about pain are holding you back, know that Tricity Institute of Plastic Surgery in Chandigarh has experienced plastic surgeons who are well versed in how to minimize recovery pain for all of his breast augmentation patients.

IS BREAST AUGMENTATION IS A MAJOR SURGERY?

While breast augmentation is considered to be major surgery, under-the-muscle breast augmentation is minimally painful and disturbing. Hence, does not require an extensive healing period.

DIFFERENT WAYS TO INSERT BREAST IMPLANTS

The most common technique to place the breast implant is by making a cut on the underside of the breast (inframammary fold). The surgeon then places the implant through this opening.

Another way of placing the implant is by making a cut around the areola, the darkened area around the nipple, and inserting the implant through the opening. The coloration and texture of this area help in hiding the surgical scar. Though the patient might feel some problem with breastfeeding and loss of sensation around the nipple area if this method is used.

A newer and not-so-common method is done at the same time as the tummy tuck. The implants are inserted through the incision used to slim the abdomen. In this case, the scar is hidden or covered by underwear. This method is recommended only when the patient is having a tummy tuck.

RECOVERY AFTER BREAST IMPLANTS

Soreness and swelling are very common after the surgery which eventually subsides 2-3 weeks after the surgery. The scars fade over time but do not disappear completely.

It is recommended to wear compression clothes for extra support and correct positioning of the breasts.  Some surgeons might also ask their patients to clean the incision site and apply ointment. Day to day normal activities can be resumed according to your cosmetic surgeon’s directions.
